All students from Foundation to Year 6 participate in weekly 1 hour Japanese lessons in our dedicated Japanese classroom.

Prep to Year 2 students focus on cultural understanding, as well as being introduced to simple language such as greetings, numbers, colours, animals and family. Students participate in games, songs and activities that encourage an understanding of Japanese culture and language.

Year 3 to Year 6 students continue to learn about Japanese culture and also focus on developing speaking and listening skills along with the reading and writing of the 46 Hiragana, some Katakana and Kanji symbols. They use adverbs, adjectives, nouns and verbs in simple sentences and grammar patterns. They are exposed to authentic materials, books, videos, songs, food, games and computer activities.

The Language program is organised into themes that provide opportunities and activities for students to develop their language and cultural understanding and which often mirror topics that are being studied in the classroom.

A highlight of the program is an annual whole school Japanese Day when the students engage in different Japanese sports, crafts, music, film, literature, art, culture or food experiences run by guest presenters, performers and teachers.
