All students from Foundation to Year 6 take part in weekly 1-hour Japanese lessons in our dedicated Japanese classroom.
Students in Prep to Year 2 focus on cultural awareness and are introduced to basic language elements, including greetings, numbers, colours, animals, and family. They engage in games, songs, and activities that promote an appreciation of both Japanese language and culture.
In Year 3 to Year 6, students deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and work on developing speaking and listening skills. They also begin learning the 46 Hiragana, some Katakana, and Kanji characters. Students practice constructing simple sentences using adverbs, adjectives, nouns, and verbs. They experience authentic materials such as books, videos, songs, food, games, and digital resources.
The language program is structured around themes that allow students to build both linguistic and cultural knowledge, often aligning with other subjects being explored in the classroom.
A key event in the program is the annual whole-school Japanese Day, where students participate in a variety of activities such as Japanese sports, crafts, music, film, literature, art, and food, led by guest presenters, performers, and teachers.
