All students from Foundation to Year 6 participate in weekly one-hour Japanese lessons in our dedicated Japanese classroom. The program is aligned with Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and supports students to develop intercultural understanding and communicative language skills.
In Prep to Year 2, students build cultural awareness while being introduced to foundational Japanese language, including greetings, numbers, colours, animals and family. Learning is playful and engaging, with games, songs and hands-on activities that encourage curiosity and enjoyment of language learning.
From Year 3 to Year 6, students further develop their speaking and listening skills and deepen their understanding of Japanese culture. They learn Hiragana, select Katakana and Kanji, and begin constructing simple sentences using key grammatical elements. Authentic resources such as books, videos, songs, food, games and digital tools enrich learning and provide real-world language experiences.
Learning is organised around meaningful themes that support the development of linguistic and cultural knowledge and often connect with learning across other curriculum areas.
A highlight of the program is the annual whole-school Japanese Day, where students participate in a range of cultural experiences including sports, crafts, music, film, literature, art and food, led by guest presenters, performers and staff.
